How did we come up with the name “Strawfoot Brigade”? Well, we were casting about for a fun name for the dedicated group of listeners who support the podcast and we knew we’d hit on something when we remembered that a common name for a raw recruit back in the Civil War was “strawfoot.” You see, officers and/or sergeants back in those days would grow exasperated at how hard it was to teach some green recruit to march when the man didn’t even know his right foot from his left foot. So the instructor would tie a wisp of hay to the greenhorn’s left foot and a bit of straw to his right, then chant “hay-foot, straw-foot, hay-foot, straw-foot” until the fellow had caught on.
